Herd Tennis Sweeps Pitt and Morehead, 7-0

Barboursville, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd tennis team took two wins Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club with a pair of 7-0 victories over Pittsburgh and Morehead State.

With the wins, Marshall improves to 6-1 on the season as it heads to Penn State next weekend to take on the Nitany Lions and St. John's.

Pitt drops to 2-1 on the season with the loss to the Herd and Morehead drops to 0-4 on the season after falling to Pitt earlier in the day.

"It was good to get a couple more wins today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "Pitt was a feisty team and they'll have a good year in the Big East. We're now looking forward to our weekend against Penn State and St. John's.

In the first match of the doubleheader, Marshall came out and swept the doubles point with 8-1, 8-0 and 8-0 wins on courts one, two and three respectively. The Herd then continued to roll as it didn't drop a set in singles against the Panthers.

At No. 1, Lynzee Kever dropped Kristy Borza 7-5, 6-3 and Kellie Schmitt took a 6-4, 6-0 win over Kimberly Harclerode at No. 2. Karolina Soor followed suit with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Leah Friedman and Jeanne Schwartz posted a 6-2, 6-1 win on court four. Rounding out the wins for the Herd against the Panthers were Shannon Brown with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Carlie Smith and Jessica Keener at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 result.

Against Morehead State, Marshall swept the doubles point again with scores of 8-1, 8-4 and 8-1 and continued to roll in singles.

Schmitt jumped into the No. 1 spot for the Herd and cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Mariana Weschenfelder and Soor took a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 over Fernanda Chiaparini. Schwartz was a 6-4, 6-0 victor over Laura Ferreira at No. 3 and Shannon Brown rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 against Megan Sammons. On court five, Jessica Keener had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Leah Lobnitz and Holly Asel finished out the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Heather Butt.

Marshall will travel to Penn State next weekend to take on the Nitany Lions at 5 p.m. on Friday and then play St. John's at noon Saturday.
