Charlottesville, Va. - The Thundering Herd tennis team came up short in its effort against No. 69 ranked Virginia Wednesday at the Boars Head Sports Club as the Cavaliers pulled out a 4-3 win against No. 64 ranked Marshall.
"We gave a really good effort today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We very disappointed to not come away with a win, but we have to stay positive because we have another chance on Sunday against a ranked opponent."
Marshall dropped to 8-2 on the year with the loss and Virginia is now 6-1 with the win.
Out of the gate, the Herd pulled out the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt defeated Douglas Wink and Rachel DelPriore 8-4 to stay undefeated on the year at No. 1, while Jeanne Schwartz and Jessica Keener were 8-6 winners on court three with an 8-6 win over Caroline Hammond and Lindsey Pereira.
Virginia's Kristen James and Lori Stern defeated Shannon Brown and Karolina Soor at No. 2 doubles. Marshall has now won the doubles point in all 10 matches on the season.
Marshall struck first in singles as Kever was dominant in the No. 1 slot for the Herd, downing Wink 6-2, 6-2. Virginia would get on the board as Stern defeated Soor at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0. The Cavaliers would then get wins from Pereira over Keener, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and DelPriore over Brown 6-4, 6-3 to take a 3-2 lead in the match.
The Cavaliers would clinch the match from the No. 2 singles position as Kristen James downed Schmitt 6-0, 7-6 after a valiant comeback effort by the Herd freshman.
Schwartz would finish things up with a win for the Herd at No. 6, over Rales, but it wasn't enough as Virginia went on to the 4-3 win.
Marshall once again came up short against Virginia as the Cavaliers now lead the series against the Herd 7-0.
The Herd will get another shot at a ranked foe Sunday in Raleigh, N.C. when they are scheduled to take on the No. 40 ranked N.C. State Wolfpack.
