GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina's Cherie Mills scored 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pirates to a 57-56 win over visiting Marshall in Conference USA women's basketball action Saturday.

The Thundering Herd opened the game with a 10-0 run, however the Pirates slowly chipped away throughout the first half and managed to enter halftime trailing Marshall by only one point at 31-30.

ECU would manage to take the lead early in the second half and maintained it until the 2:12 mark when the Herd's Modupe Ishola netted a layup to put Marshall back on top 56-55. ECU answered on a LaCoya Terry bucket with 1:45 to go to set up a dramatic ending.

The Thundering Herd managed a late stop and controlled the ball with less than thirty seconds to go and trailing by one. Following a time out, Marshall worked the ball to Mary Pat Statler who took a potential game winning shot from about 12 feet out off of the left wing that hit the rim and fell short.

Marshall was led by KaShawna Curry's 14 points. Ishola added 13 points and nine rebounds, while Reshundra Smiley chipped in with 10 points.

The Herd shot 45.7% from the field and out-rebounded the host Pirates 36-32, but could not overcome a 24-15 turnover differential.

Marshall fell to 10-10 overall, 5-4 in Conference USA with the loss. East Carolina improved to 13-7 overall and 5-4 in C-USA.

The Herd will return to action on Monday night at Houston. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. EST.
