PINEHURST, N.C. - Hoping to put a tough start to the spring season behind it, the Marshall women's golf team is set to resume tournament play on Sunday at the 2006 Pinehurst Challenge.

The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be played on the par-72, 5,954-yard Pinehurst No. 8. The course was rated No. 16 by Golf for Women magazine's top-50 courses for women to play in 2005. No. 8 is one eight courses at historic Pinehurst, site of Payne Stewart's dramatic 18th hole putt at the 1999 U.S. Open and many other PGA championship events.

Head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey will travel five golfers, with the top four from each round counting toward the overall team score. Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio), Meredith Crislip (Parkersburg, W.Va.), Tammy Mahar (Ashland, Ky.), Jodie Switzer (Collingwood, Ont.) and Stacy Wagner (Harmony, Pa.) will represent Marshall at the 19-team tournament.

Marshall finished in seventh place in the seven-team, season-opening Baja Invitational in Ensenada, Mexico, on Feb. 13-14. None of Marshall's seven players recorded a round better than a final-round 81 by Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.).

Hatcher did not travel with the team due to illness.

"After starting the season with one of our worst performances in recent memory, the girls have been working really hard the last three weeks," Knight Rowsey said. "If we can manage to go to Pinehurst and focus completely on golf for 54 holes, we can do a complete 180 from Mexico."

Joining the Herd will be Arkansas-Little Rock, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Iowa, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Washington State, Western Michigan, Winthrop, Xavier and the Scandinavian Amateurs.

College of Charleston is serving as host of the 2006 Pinehurst Challenge. Washington State won last year's event.

Sunday (12:45 p.m.) and Monday's 18-hole rounds will commence with tee times. A shotgun start will begin Tuesday's final round. Recap and results of each round will be posted on HerdZone.com once they become available.
