HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer program has released the 2006 schedule. The Herd will play nine home games, nine away games and will face eight opponents for the first time.
"We're very happy with our 2006 schedule, both non-conference and Conference USA. I think our schedule is very balanced and we're extremely excited about hosting the Nike Invitational this year. We have some very good programs coming to Huntington in the fall which should be exciting for the community to watch, including NCAA participant UTEP and Colorado College, the newest C-USA women's soccer member," Head Coach Chris Kane said.
The Thundering Herd is scheduled to start the season off with two exhibition games against Ohio University and the University of Charleston. The Bobcats will return to Sam Hood Field on Aug. 18 with a 7:00 p.m. start. Marshall will travel to Charleston to play the Golden Eagles on Aug. 20 at 1:00 p.m.
The regular season starts with road trips to New Jersey Tech and Saint Peter's University on Aug. 25 and 27. This will be a first time meeting between Marshall and both teams. New Jersey Tech, located in Newark, N.J., is a member of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Saint Peter's Peahens, members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, is located in Jersey City, N.J.
Marshall's home opener will take place on Sept. 1 against George Washington in the second annual Thundering Herd Nike Invitational. G.W. and the Herd will play at 7:00 p.m. in the second match of the night. The University of Delaware and Morehead State will play at 4:30 to open the tournament. On Sunday, Sept. 3 Marshall will again play the second match of the day, this time facing off with Delaware at 2:00 p.m. G.W. and Morehead will open play on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Marshall has never faced G.W. or Delaware.
The following weekend, Sept. 8 and Sept. 10, Marshall will travel to Pittsburgh and Akron.
The Herd will finish out its non-conference schedule with a three game home stand. On Sunday, Sept. 17 Delaware State University will make its first appearance at Sam Hood Field. Marshall will then play host to Eastern Kentucky in a mid-week match, Sept. 20, and Morehead State on Friday, Sept. 22.
The Herd opens C-USA play with a three-game road trip to UAB Sept. 29, Memphis, Oct. 1 and East Carolina on Oct. 6. The Pirates defeated the Herd in double overtime last season, 1-0.
The remainder of the season is comprised of four home matches split with two away. The first two home games are with Southern Miss (Oct. 13) and UCF, (Oct. 15). The final regular season road trip will take the Herd to Dallas, Texas, and Tulsa, Okla., for matches with SMU and Tulsa on Oct. 20 and Oct. 22, respectively.
Marshall will play new C-USA affiliate member Colorado College at home on Oct. 27. Colorado College recently joined C-USA for the 2006 season to compensate for Tulane's absence in the sport. The last new opponent of the season, UTEP, will close out the regular season on Oct. 29.
