HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team fell 2-0 in exhibition play Saturday to West Virginia in front of 713 spectators at Sam Hood Field. WVU tallied two goals in a 1:08 span late in the first half to provide the margin of victory.
The first half was extremely physical, featuring seven yellow cards and one red card (the coaches agreed not to play a man down in the exhibition). In all, there were 32 fouls, with Marshall accumulating 17.
WVU took advantage of a Marshall handball in the 42nd minute to take the lead, as Dan Stratford buried the penalty kick past Marshall goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.). The Mountaineers tacked on an insurance goal just over a minute later, as Mike Anoia headed a pass from Stratford past a diving Terhune. Paul Cunningham also earned an assist on the play.
Terhune recorded four saves, while WVU goalkeeper Nick Noble stopped two shots. WVU held an advantage in shots (13-5) and shots on goal (7-3).
Marshall opens regular-season play at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Manhattan at Sam Hood Field.
