HUNTINTGTON, W.Va.- Kassie Hollman notched her first ever hat trick in the Marshall women's soccer 4-0 shutout over Eastern Kentucky tonight at Sam Hood Field. The meeting was the first ever between the two teams.

"I am proud of the players for the way they came out tonight after a trying week of workouts and practices. I thought for having such a long break between matches they played well early in the game," Head Coach Chris Kane said.

The Thundering Herd opened scoring up in the fourth minute of play when Sara Burdick and Julia Axelsson moved the ball up field to find Hollman inside of the box. Hollman made one move to beat the goalkeeper and find the back of the net for her third goal of the season. The assist was Burdick's first of the season and Axelsson's second.

Hollman tallied the second goal of the match unassisted in the 19th minute of play.

Axelsson combined with Tracy Fischer for the third goal of the half. Fischer one touched an EKU clear at the midfield into the Colonel box where Axelsson was waiting. Axelsson collected the ball and took the shot on her second touch sending the ball to the far corner of the net. The point was Axelsson's third goal of the season and Fischer's first assist.

Marshall entered halftime leading EKU in shots, 9-3, tied in saves, 2-2, and trailing in corner kicks, 2-1.

Play progressed for 25 minutes in the second half before another goal would be scored.

Once again, Burdick would connect with Hollman for the score. Burdick collected the ball and sent a it up field. Hollman finished the play for her third goal of the season and Marshall's fourth and final of the match.

"I am happy for Kassie [Hollman] for achieving her hat trick tonight. She is such a dangerous weapon for us," said Kane.

In total, the Herd had three different players earn assists and two score goals.

"We need to continue this hard work, focus and level of play for our match with Morehead State on Friday," Kane said.

After 90 minutes Marshall registered 13 shots to EKU's six. Herd goalkeeper Liz Orton made five saves in her second career shutout. Colonel goalkeeper Christina Graul made four saves in the match.

Marshall will be in action at Sam Hood Field again on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. to face the Eagles of Morehead State and on Monday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. versus the Hornets of Delaware State in the first ever meeting.
