COACH RAFA SIMOES
- Head Coach Rafa Simoes is in his third season leading the MU Women's Soccer program. The former associate with the Herd men's team is a 2018 graduate of the University of Charleston in West Virginia, where he played for then-head coach Chris Grassie.
- Simoes and the Herd has followed up a resurgent 2025 season. In his second year as skipper for MU, Simoes led the team to win its most games in a decade (8) with four All-Conference selections, also the program's most since 2015. The team has now matched that total in 2026, with eight additional wins and consecutive winning seasons for the first time in program history.
PRE-MATCH NOTES
- Marshall needed a win in its regular season finale at Coastal Carolina to advance to the postseason, and got exactly that with a 4-1 victory on the road. The Herd thundered back with four second half goals to secure qualification to consecutive postseason tournaments for the first time since 2013-15.
- Marshall forward Wiktoria Mikrut was named the SBC Newcomer of the Year and a Third Team All-Conference member on Thursday. Mikrut finished the regular season with seven goals (T-7th in SBC) and 17 points (7th in SBC).
- The Herd seeks its first SBC Semifinal Round appearance. MU won a First Round game in double overtime in its first season in the league in 2022 to advance to the Quarterfinal round.
- Marshall has never won a conference tournament in program history and is seeking its first NCAA Tournament appearance in the 29th season of the program. The Herd's best postseason finish was a Conference USA Championship Match appearance in 2015.
ABOUT THE MONARCHS
- Old Dominion finished as the SBC co-champions with JMU, both teams finishing with 23 points and a 7-1-2 record. The Monarchs enter the postseason on a four-match winning streak.
- Will Roberts is in his first season at ODU. Roberts - a former University of Charleston soccer player under Coach Grassie and teammate of Simoes - had a successful three-year stint with ULM, leading the Warhawks to the SBC regular season title last year. The Warhawks eliminated MU in last season's tournament en route to the championship match.
- Marshall leads the all-time series, 5-4-3. ODU won the regular season contest by a 3-0 scoreline in Norfolk in October.
