EL PASO, Texas - Senior guard Tre Whitted (Wilmington, N.C.) came off of the Herd bench to tie a career-high with 20 points, but it was not enough as the UTEP Miners downed the Thundering Herd, 88-64, Wednesday evening at Haskins Center.
UTEP improves to 10-6, 2-0 in C-USA, while Marshall falls to 5-10, 0-2 in league play.
Marshall held the lead early in the contest, and held an 18-13 lead at the 11:55 mark. But, UTEP responded with a 23-2 run over the next seven minutes of the contest to put the Miners up for good. Marshall trailed by 20 at the break, 51-31, and never got closer than that in the second half.
For the game, UTEP fired in 47% of its shots and shot 43.5% from three. The Herd shot 31.8% from the floor and only 29.2% from three for the game. Marshall also committed 21 turnovers, which resulted in 30 Miner points. UTEP also out-rebounded the Herd, 46-43, on the night.
"I thought they played great, and they really shot the ball well against the press," said Marshall head coach Ron Jirsa. "I thought that they were the first team this year that we were not able to press, and they did a good job getting by us on the dribble. I have to give them credit. They really shot the ball well in the first half."
Whitted scored all of his 20 points in the second half to lead Marshall. Freshman center Robbie Jackson (Aberdeen, Md.) scored a career-high 12 points and grabbed a career-best eight rebounds, and Chris Ross (San Antonio, Texas) notched ten points for the Herd.
Kevin Henderson led all scorers with 21 points. The Miners had four other players in double figures - Marvin Kilgore with 15, Malik Alvin with 14, Maurice Thomas with 11, and Stefon Jackson with ten.
The Herd returns home to play UCF Saturday evening. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Cam Henderson Center.
