COLUMBUS, Ohio - In its first head-to-head competition since November, the Marshall Thundering Herd women's swimming and diving team suffered a pair of tough losses Friday to Ohio State and Northwestern at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The hosting Buckeyes (4-1) defeated the Herd 148-86, while the Wildcats (2-5) were 150-87 victors.

The Herd (4-4) lost for the first time since Nov. 4, when it was defeated by West Virginia and Duquesne in Huntington. It marked the second straight year that the Herd lost at Ohio State by a narrow margin.

"We knew we would have our hands full with these two schools," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "I thought we swam well. Ohio State and Northwestern are just exceptional programs."

Junior co-captain Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) recorded a third-place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:33.28. Teammates Danielle Chappelle (London, Ontario/Central Secondary) and Jessica Prater (South Point, Ohio/Grace Christian) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Kyla Jungclaus (Brownstown, Ind./Seymour) was the Herd's highest finisher in the 200-yard freestyle, registering a time of 2:00.01. Freshman Kristin Wheatley (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) touched the wall at 2:11.78 in the 200-yard IM for a fifth-place finish.

Sophomore Samantha Noland (Dearborn, Mich./Dearborn) recorded a season-best time of 1:01.37 in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing sixth overall.

In the 100-yard breaststroke, Marshall record holder Michaela Sceli (LaSalle, Ontario/St. Thomas of Villanova) finished less than seven-tenths of a second off her school-best time. Sceli finished with a time of 1:06.24 in the exhibitioned event.

"Now, we get to close out the regular season at home on a positive note heading into the Conference USA Championships."

The Marshall Thundering Herd returns home for back-to-back home dates to close out its regular season slate. The Herd will host the Miami RedHawks and Radford Highlanders in a tri-meet Friday, Jan. 19. at 6 p.m.
