IRVING, Texas - The Marshall University women's basketball team has been selected to finish ninth in the Conference USA 2007-08 regular season. The poll, released on Wednesday, was voted on by the 12 coaches in the conference.

Seven teams received votes to win the conference, led by the defending regular season champion Tulane Green Wave, who received 126 votes. UTEP tallied 109 votes for second while defending C-USA Tournament champion East Carolina was third with 106 votes.

The Thundering Herd, which finished last season with a 15-15 record, was 8-8 in Conference USA, good for an eighth place finish.

Though the Herd lost seniors Bridget Chacon, KaShawna Curry and Modupe Ishola, the team brings back eight returning letter winners, along with seven newcomers.

"There are a few girls on the team who we did not put a release out for last spring" head coach Royce Chadwick said. "With some of these newcomers such as Casey Baker, Kizzy Hart and Sophie Lenard being in our program, we feel that our team can come out and surprise our opponents."

"It is not about where you start, its about where you finish and we are ready to get the 2007-08 season started."

Tye Jackson, a senior guard for Houston, was tabbed as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year. Jackson is a two-time All-C-USA first teamer.

Marshall opens up its preseason with two home exhibition games, starting with Kentucky State on October 31 at 7 p.m. and finishing with West Virginia Wesleyan on November 4 at 6 p.m. The regular season starts on November 9 with a trip to Evansville for the first round of the Preseason WNIT.
