COLUMBIA, S.C. - - The Marshall University men's soccer team fell 3-1 to host South Carolina in a Conference USA match, Saturday evening at Stone Stadium.
With the win, South Carolina improves to 9-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in conference action, while the Herd drops to 8-7-1 and 2-4-0 in C-USA.
The Gamecocks jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game. Will Traynor volleyed a corner kick from Jeff Scannella to give South Carolina the early advantage.
Nearly 20 minutes later, the Gamecocks extended their lead to two after Scannella fired a low line drive to the left side of the goal. Two minutes later, Mike Lindsay found a seam in the Herd defense with a through ball from Mark Wiltse that Lindsay knocked in, giving South Carolina a 3-0 lead.
The Herd's lone goal came at the 72:13 mark when Osric Flores sent a cross in to Avneet Shergill, who volleyed the shot into the goal. Shergill has three goals on the season, which places him third on the team. Flores was credited with the assist giving him five, tying him with JD Hill.
