HUNTINGTON - The Marshall swimming and diving team will end an almost three week break Thursday as it faces tough competition at the Miami Invitational hosted by Miami University on Nov 29-Dec. 1.
The Herd will be looking to carry the momentum from its 179-59 win over Vanderbilt into this week's contest. Marshall set 47 season-best and three pool records against the Commodores.
"I always look forward to this meet," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "It has fast swimmers and excellent divers. It gives the same look and feel of our conference championship meet so it is helpful in that way."
This will be the first time all season that Marshall's swimmers have tapered off their training so all of them will be looking for new season-bests.
Senior breastroker Michaela Sceli broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke against Vanderbilt on her way to earning Conference USA Swimmer of the Week honors. Sceli currently ranks second in the conference in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 breast and will look to lower her times this week.
"We have a chance to step up, see what we can do and set up swimmers for the second half of the season and conference," Kraus said. "We have a lot of girls bunched together in quite a few events so the staff will be looking for some individuals to step up and separate themselves. I have tremendous confidence in the girls making their drops because we have been training well the last three weeks."
Kraus also said the relays will be a key part of the Herd's focus this week, as it looks for clean and quick exchanges and hopefully several new season bests.
The diving competition at the Miami Invitational is loaded with excellent competition. However, this is the Marshall diving squad's second invitational in the last two weeks as they competed in the Hoosierland Invitational on Nov. 15-17, so Kraus expects them to be more comfortable heading into Thursday.
