HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - - The Marshall University Foundation joined university officials, students, student-athletes and alumni to launch the new campaign known as "The Bridge," which announced the construction project of the new softball complex.
"This is such an exciting time for students at Marshall University with all the construction on campus," Marshall softball head coach Shonda Stanton said. "Specifically for our softball program, this new facility will provide us a first class venue to showcase a first class product. Our student-athletes have a strong commitment to excel both in the classroom and on the field, and we will take great pride in competing at home."
"The Bridge" is a united fund-raising effort to support academics, athletics and alumni through the building of new facilities. Other projects recognized at the ceremony include a new Alumni Center and Foundation offices and a lab facility for the College of Information Technology and Engineering.
Construction for the softball field has begun at the site with phase one and two scheduled to be completed by March 2008. The first two phases include the playing surface, warm-up areas, grandstands, press box and concession building. Currently, the backstop is up and construction on the dugouts has just begun. Final preparation for the playing surface will be underway shortly, which will allow the placement of the field turf. The state-of-the-art facility will allow the Marshall softball team to feature its talent in a venue close to campus. Benefits of the new facility range from an edge in recruiting to possibly hosting the Conference USA Championship.
"We appreciate the vision of President Kopp and Mr. Ketchum along with Mr. Marcum's administration in their efforts for this project," Stanton continued. "We look forward to hosting a celebration event mid-March as we open play and have the opportunity to thank the Board of Governors, project managers, the Foundation Staff, Physical Plant Department, Donors and all those involved in the success of this site. "
The final stage of construction for the new $2.5 million facility will begin in the summer, which includes the clubhouse.
The Marshall softball team has excelled on the field, capturing the Mid-American Conference regular season crown in 2003, 2005 and played in the C-USA Championship game. The Herd has produced quality student-athletes, including three-time All-American Rachel Folden.
"The new field will elevate our recruiting and is in a great location for students," three time NCAA All-American catcher Folden said. "It will be an exciting time for all our players to play in such a top-notch venue."
The ceremony began with Dot Hicks turning over the dirt to begin the construction of the three new projects. Hicks was accompanied by Associate Athletic Director/Chief of Staff Jeff O'Malley, Folden and former softball standout Amanda Williams. Hicks has been a Marshall supporter over the years and without her help the new facility would not be where it is today.
"Dot Hicks is a true champion of Marshall athletics and has helped pave the way for the opportunities that our current student-athletes have, particularly with our female sports. She is a go-getter and has been working hard with the Foundation Staff to secure funding for this project," Stanton said. "We appreciate the donors who have already contributed and look forward to releasing various naming rights once completed."
The Marshall softball team is preparing to kickoff the 2008 schedule when it heads to Athens, Ga., to participate in the Red/Black Showcase hosted by the University of Georgia. The home-opener is set for March 15 at 1 p.m. against Conference USA foe Houston.
