HUNTINGTON, W.Va - Tied at 47 with just over ten minutes left in the game, the Marshall women's basketball team finished the contest on a 23-11 run to down Navy 70-58 in Sunday's "Jam the Came" game at the Cam Henderson Center.
For the third straight game, Kizzy Hart topped the Herd in scoring, netting 15 points. Tynikki Crook finished with 14, a career best. Casey Baker had the top all-round game for Marshall, finishing with ten assists and nine steals, both career highs.
Head coach Royce Chadwick was pleased with the win, its second in three days. "I thought we were on again, off again. A big part of that has to do with that we've had a game on the road Friday, we're here Sunday then back on the road Tuesday," Chadwick said. "This is about reaching deep inside yourself and pulling out the things that get a W and I was really happy for our team that we were able to get it done. Our bench made some huge contributions today. "
Marshall (6-4, 0-0 C-USA), winners of six of its last seven games, looked like it would run away with the match, starting the game on a 16-4 run in the first six minutes. Tynikki Crook tallied eight of those points.
Navy (2-9, 0-0 Patriot League) would counter with a run of their own, 18-6, to tie the game at 22 with 8:36 left in the half. They would eventually gain a 28-26 lead on a lay-up by Angela Myers, however, junior Meg Withrow took over, scoring seven of the next nine Marshall points as the Herd would take a 36-29 lead to the locker room.
The second half would see the Herd extend its lead to ten points, 41-31, just over two minutes in, but the Midshipmen made another run to knot the game at 47 with just under 11 minutes remaining in the game.
That would prove to be the last run the Midshipmen could muster as the Herd would finish the game on a 23-11 run to win its third straight game, 70-58.
Joining Hart and Crook in double-digits were Alyssa Hammond and Meagan Samis, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively. Withrow finished the game with nine points while Chantelle Handy grabbed seven boards, tied for the game high.
Navy finished with two scorers in double-digits. K.C. Gordon led all players with 16 points while Cassie Consedine had 12.
"We didn't start exceptionally fast this season but you know in college basketball it's not how you start, its how you finish," Chadwick commented. "We need to keep moving in the right direction. By the end of non-conference we will have played 10 road games and four home games, that's brutal but it will leave benefits for next year. I think this team is getting tougher with each game they play."
Sunday's game marked the seventh-annual "Jam the Cam". 927 fans were on hand for the win over Navy. Prior to the game, West Virginia legend Woody Williams led the color guard for the national anthem while a video presentation was shown at halftime.
The 1996-97 team was also honored during the game. Former head coach Sarah Evans-Moore, along with several players from the Southern Conference Championship team were on hand.
Marshall will play one more game before Christmas break, traveling to Arlington, Texas for a Tuesday match against the University of Texas at Arlington. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
