BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd trounced both its opponents Friday, winning back-to-back matches 7-0.

The Herd improved its home record to 5-1 at home by defeating the Miami RedHawks 7-0 in Friday's first match.

Marshall won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association's No. 27 ranked team of Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt played their first match since Feb. 4 and defeated Katrina Lomidze and Linda Jirouskova, 8-4. At the second spot in the lineup Karolina Soor and Thaddea Lock bested Miami's Kelly Douple and Kristen McPhillips, 8-5.

The ITA's 28th-ranked singles player, Schmitt improved her record to 9-1 after dispatching Lomidze, 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 1 spot. At No. 2 Karolina Soor handled Jirouskova, 6-1, 6-0. Yulia Kashelkina took the victory in the third spot with a 6-1, 6-0, match Kelly Douple.

The Herd continued to assert its dominance throughout the lineup with Kever winning 6-2, 6-3, in the four spot over McPhillips. Jeanne Schwartz claimed a commanding victory at the No. 5 position over Victoria Pulido, 6-1, 6-2. Finishing off the RedHawks, Jessica Keener topped Jessica Linden, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Marshall head coach John Mercer said he was pleased with the on-court performance of his team.

"We had a definite improvement in doubles after last weekend," he said. "I was also impressed with how we played singles. We played solid points in all six positions."

The Herd won it's third straight match of the season defeating the Eastern Kentucky Colonels 7-0.

Marshall won the second straight doubles point of the day with Schmitt and Kever winning at the top position over Svetlana Pimenova and Alexandra Sitnikova, 8-4. On court three Soor and Schwartz claimed their first victory as a team for the season taking out Casie Phillips and Page Ashby, 8-0.

The final doubles match featured an incredible comeback by the team of Kashelkina and Keener who began the match behind 5-2. The duo forced a tiebreaker taking the match 7-7 with Lucia Vojtkova and Jemma Euers. Marshall's No. 2 team took the match's tiebreaker 7-4, sealing the 8-7 victory and helping the Herd sweep the evening's doubles matches.

In singles the Herd continued to roll and picked up a win in every match. However, the No. 1 match featuring No. 28 Schmitt and Pimenova. Schmitt took the first set, 6-1, but was taken to a tiebreaker in the second. Schmitt, battling flu-like symptoms, overcame her opponent winning the second set 7-6 (8-6).

Playing at No. 3, Kashelkina and Sitnikova clashed in a three set duel. Kashelkina took the first set 6-1. In the second set Sitnikova returned from a 4-0 deficit to take the set 7-5. In the 10-point tiebreaker Kashelkina was able to overwhelm her opponent and take the set and the match, 10-8.

"I was really impressed with the way Pimenova played," Mercer said. "We played great and Eastern just hung in there to make it very competitive coming down the stretch. I'm really happy with the way we played and with our improvement. Now we have to get ready for Sunday and South Alabama."

South Alabama will be coming into the Huntington Tennis Club for an 11 a.m. start Sunday with the Herd.
