AKRON - Marshall University had an outstanding showing at the Akron Open on Saturday. The Thundering Herd track team set three school records and came away with first-place finishes in three events.
Junior Teniqua Sutton had a tremendous day by winning two events and placing third in another. The native of Westbury, N.J., won the triple jump by bettering her own school record of 39-feet-five inches (12.01m) with a jump of 39-feet-9.25 inches (12.12 meters). She also took first-place in the high jump with a jump of five feet and ½ inch (1.54m), and finished third in the long jump by recording a leap of 18 feet and ½ inch (5.50m).
Thundering Herd freshman Angelica Harris had an impressive showing of her own on Saturday. The Clinton, S.C., native won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.70 seconds and placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.06 seconds.
Britani Burke led the Marshall throwers with a first-place effort in the weight throw. The junior from Proctorville, Ohio, recorded a throw of 51-06.25 (15.70m) to take the top spot among 27 competitors in the event.
Sophomore Carmissa Morris tied the school record in the 60-meter dash with a preliminary time of 7.74 seconds. That ties the Marshall indoor best set by Tara Lee in 1999. The Greenville, S.C., native went on to finish fifth in the finals with a time of 7.75 seconds.
Marshall senior and Flat Top, W.Va., native Marian Brooks established a new school record for the mile with a time of 5:07.03 to finish second in the event behind Tiffany Brenneman who ran as an unattached athlete and was timed at 5:06.29.
"We had a very good meet and I am proud of what we were able to accomplish this weekend in Akron," Marshall Head Coach Jeff Small said. "Hopefully we can get a break in the weather this week and get some quality outdoor training in prior to next week's meet at Clemson."
