PINEHURST, N.C. - The Marshall women's golf team finished the 2007 Pinehurst Challenge, played at the par-72, 5,978-yard Pinehurst #8, in 16th place after shooting a final round 337 on Tuesday. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to weather issues on Monday.
East Carolina claimed the 17-team Pinehurst Challenge due to a tiebreaker with N.C. State. Both schools finished with a 613, but the Pirates' fifth player's scorecard was lower than the Wolfpack's fifth player's total.
Sara Wikstrom of Arkansas-Little Rock tied with ECU's Lene Krog for medalist honors. Both players shot 75 on Monday and a 2-over 74 today for a total of 149. UNC Wilmington's Emily Klein placed third (151).
Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio) was Marshall's top finisher with a 165 to place in a tie for 64th.. Fellow senior Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.) fired the best Herd round on Tuesday with a 9-over 81 to finish the tournament in a tie for 77th place (169).
Freshman Larie Lynch (Huntington, W.Va.) followed up her opening-round 85 with an 82 to finish in a tie for 72nd place (167).
Marshall will compete in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Winter Springs, Fla., on March 12-13.
