IRVING, Texas - Marshall senior Amber Churchill (Dublin, Ohio) has been named the Conference USA Women's Golfer of the Week, thanks to her third-place showing at the BGSU Falcon Invitational, the league office announced today.
Churchill won her first career C-USA Golfer of the Week honor after finishing seven strokes off the lead at the Bowling Green-hosted event on April 16-17, helping the Herd to a second-place finish. It was her best finish since the 2005 Lady Herd Fall Invitational, where she placed second, and MU's best of the 2006-07 season.
The wintry weather in northern Ohio made for difficult playing conditions through the first 36 holes on Monday, but the weather improved for Tuesday's final round allowing for a dramatic drop of scores. Churchill fired a 5-over 77 in the final 18 holes the heels of an opening-round 82 followed by an 83.
Churchill posted a tournament-best 27 pars at the event. She was one of three Marshall golfers in the top-20.
This is the first C-USA weekly award for a Marshall golfer since senior Allyson Hatcher (Wheeling, W.Va.) won the accolade on Sept. 14, 2007.
Churchill and the Herd will compete in the C-USA Championship in Birmingham, Ala., on April 23-25.
