HUNTINGTON - The Thundering Herd's women's golf program received a substantial boost in late June when the Berridge Long Copen Endowed Scholarship was increased from $50,000 to $100,000.
Noel and Berridge Long Copen intitated the first $50,000 in 2002 when the Marshall women's golf program was resumed after a 20-year hiatus. The Copens are both Marshall alumni and Berridge was a seven-time West Vigrinia Amateur champion.
RJ Gimbl, executive director of the Big Green Scholarship Foundation, said the Copens are a leading example of Marshall graduates giving back to their alma mater.
"We are deeply grateful to Berridge and Noel for their support and loyalty," said Gimbl.
"This is the type of support the program needs to attract top prospects and to establish success for the team both on the course and in the classroom," said Marshall women's golf coach Meredith Knight Rowsey.
The Copen scholarship brings the number of endowed Big Green scholarships which are $100,000 or above to 23. Over the past five years, the value of the student-athlete endowment program has doubled, growing from $2.6 million to more than $5.2 million.
