CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Marshall University senior outside hitter Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) tallied a match-high 17 kills to help lift the Herd to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-23) sweep of Akron in Saturday night's non-conference Friends of Coal volleyball match at the Charleston Civic Center.
With the win Marshall improves to 7-7 on the season while Akron falls to 8-5 overall.
Down 2-0 in the match, Akron pulled to within two at 22-24 in the third game before Billingy registered three kills, and the Herd scored six of the next seven points, to seal its seventh win of the season.
In the first frame, the teams fought to six tie scores and two lead changes before Marshall posted a 27-24 advantage. The Herd then scored the next three points to close out the game.
Leading the match 1-0, the Herd posted a 28-18 lead before Akron tallied three straight points to pull to within eight at 28-21. From there, the Herd used a service error and a sophomore outside hitter Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) ace to seal the victory.
Marcum finished with three service aces and 11 digs on the night while senior libero Maggie Arias (Indianapolis, Ind.) added 17 digs in the win.
Freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming (South Bend, Ind.) finished with 34 assists and joined Billingy, who recorded three service aces on the night, in being named to the Friends of Coal Blue/Green Classic All-Tournament Team.
Senior outside hitter Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.), senior middle hitter Uche Ndubisi (Indianapolis, Ind.), junior defensive specialist Taylor Tanner (Union, Ky.) and Fleming added a service ace apiece in the win.
The Herd will open Conference USA action when it travels to Dallas, Texas to take on SMU on Friday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. ET. The Herd then hosts its conference home opener on Sunday, Sept. 23 against Tulsa at 2 p.m.
