HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Marshall University senior outside hitter Kelly-Anne Billingy tallied a match-high 24 kills to help lift the Herd to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-21) victory over the University of Southern Mississippi in Friday night's Conference USA volleyball match in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
Marshall wins its fourth straight match and improves to 10-7 overall (3-0 C-USA), while Southern Miss falls to 9-10 overall (0-3 C-USA).
"We are playing some very good volleyball right now," head coach Mitch Jacobs said after the match. "Southern Miss really pressed us at times, none of the games were out of reach."
Leading the match 2-0, Marshall built a 7-4 lead in game three before the Eagles took an 8-7 lead. The Herd then knotted the game at eight with a block assist by junior middle hitter Jalicia Ross and Billingy. From there, the teams fought to seven lead changes and a 19-19 tie before the Herd used a 8-2 run to take a 28-21 lead. Billingy finished the game with her 24th kill of the match and a service ace.
In the second game, the Herd posted a 21-16 lead and used a 9-5 run, capped by a Ross kill, to close out the game and give Marshall a 2-0 advantage in the match. Billingy tallied nine kills in the frame while senior middle hitter Uche Ndubisi recorded two roof blocks for the Herd.
In the first stanza, Marshall built an 18-13 lead behind five kills from Billingy. From there, the Herd used a kill and a block by Ndubisi to extend its lead to 25-18 before Southern Miss got to within four at 26-22. Marshall tallied four of the next six points and used a kill by Ross to seal the game one victory.
Freshman setter Elizabeth Fleming notched a match-high 41 assists and tallied a team-high 18 digs, while Ndubisi finished with four solo blocks and two assisted. Billingy recorded one solo block and five solo, while Ross added six assisted blocks in the win for the Herd.
Senior libero Maggie Arias tallied 15 digs while sophomore outside hitter Kristin Marcum contributed 11 digs for the Herd.
"I am really proud of the way we played as a team tonight," Jacobs said.
The Herd returns to C-USA action Sunday, Sept. 30 when it travels to Orlando, Fla. to square off against the University of Central Florida. Match time is slated for 12 p.m. ET.
Marshall will host the 2007 Conference USA Championship on Nov. 15 to the 18th at the Cam Henderson Center and ticket prices are as follows:
