Marshall Women's Tennis Opens Season Strong

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd tennis team's No. 48 nationally-ranked Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and No. 59 duo Schmitt and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) captured opening round victories in Flight A of the William and Mary Invitational, Friday evening.
"We are playing against good teams in the invitational," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "Hopefully tomorrow we have a good day and improve."
In Flight A singles second round, Schmitt defeated No. 25 nationally-ranked Ela Kaluder from Arkansas 6-4, 6-3.
"I am excited about Kellie [Schmitt] defeating No. 25 Kaluder from Arkansas," Coach Mercer added. "We did a good job playing better in the second matches with better decisions."
The Herd also picked up victories from Soor in Flight B singles second round action and Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) in Flight D singles second round.
Also in Flight E singles second round, Marshall tallied victories from Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.).
