BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Marshall junior Sterling Flunder (Bothell, Wash.) recorded his first two collegiate goals, but it wasn't enough as Belmont's Justin Mooneyhan scored his second goal of the season in overtime to give the Bruins a 3-2 victory, Friday evening at the Fairfield Inn-Bowling Green Hilltopper Classic.
The Thundering Herd outshot the Bruins 17-13 and recorded six shots on goal. The loss dropped the Herd to 1-3-0 overall and Belmont improved 1-3-0 on the season.
After falling behind 2-0, the Herd answered with two goals of their own. Flunder tallied his first goal five minutes before halftime. Teammate Osric Flores (Everett, Wash.) hit Flunder on a cross from a corner kick, who handled the pass and capitalized on his position inside the 18-yard box with a score to cut the Bruin lead in half.
Flunder wasted no time in the second half to even the match. In a similar scenario, Flores sent another corner kick cross, and Flunder smashed a one-time volley passed the Bruins' goalie Ron Gravely at the 49th minute mark.
The two teams would play even soccer until regulation ended. During the first overtime period Wade Wonderlin assisted on the Mooneyhan header to capture the Bruins' first victory of the season. All three of the Bruins' goals came from headers.
The Herd returns to action, Sunday, Sept. 16 at noon (Central Standard Time) to conclude the classic against Centenary.
