Marshall Women's Tennis Opens Day One of UVa Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marshall women's tennis opened the inaugural University of Virginia Invitational with five wins at the Snyder Tennis Center on Friday. The Herd's No. 48 nationally-ranked Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) captured a victory in Flight A Singles action with a straight-set victory over UVa's Stevens, 6-3, 6-1.
"We played good matches against UVa today," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "Hopefully tomorrow we can continue to have good success."
Marshall's Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) was defeated by UVa's Pereira, 6-3, 6-1, in Flight B singles on Friday.
In Flight C singles action, UVa's Rales took the win against the Herd's Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England), 6-3, 6-2.
In straight-set, Marshall's Isabel Raich (Austria) defeated UVa's Yahner, 6-2, 7-5 in Flight D singles.
Out of the remaining three flights, Marshall took two wins over UVa. In Flight E, Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) defeated Nimitz (UVa) in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-2. However, in Flight F singles, the Herd's Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) battled UVa's Alexander in two sets, 6-2, 7-6, with UVa's player taking the win. In the final Flight G, Marshall's Kassie Moore defeated UVa's Downing in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles action, UVa's Rales/Stevens defeated Marshall's duo of Schmitt/Lock, 8-4, in Flight A. UVa's Yahner/Perseira defeated the Herd's Soor/Kashelkina, 8-1, in Flight B doubles. In the final flight, Marshall's duo of Raich/Keever defeated UVA's duo of Alexander/Williams, 8-5.
Action will continue on Saturday with doubles play beginning at 10 a.m. The invitational will conclude on Sunday at 9 a.m. at the Snyder Tennis Center.
