Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB outscored Marshall 21-6 in overtime to take a 79-64 win over the Thundering Herd women's basketball team at Bartow Arena on Saturday night.

Marshall (10-6, 2-1 C-USA) would make a late charge in regulation to send the game to the extra period, however, UAB (7-9, 3-0 C-USA) would dominate in overtime to take the win.

Casey Baker led the Herd with 18 points while grabbing six rebounds and notching two steals. Kizzy Hart and Meg Withrow finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

A late run gave UAB a 39-33 halftime lead. After the Blazers opened the game on 9-7 run, the Herd grabbed its first lead of the game, 11-9, on consecutive buckets by Alyssa Hammond.

After UAB retook the lead just a short time later, Marshall would fight back to take a 17-16 lead, which would grow to nine points, 30-21, with eight minutes left in the opening period. Three-pointers by Casey Baker and Meg Withrow finished off the run. UAB's defense would take control at that point, holding Marshall scoreless over the next seven minutes.

The Blazers would take a 31-30 on a free throw by Britney Jones with 3:27 left in the period and would see the lead grow to 36-30 just two minutes later. With 48 seconds remaining in the half, Withrow ended the UAB run, connecting on her second three of the game to cut the Blazer lead to 36-33, but a three by Amanda Peterson finished off her run of eight consecutive points to give the Blazers a six-point lead.

The Blazers would see its lead grow to double digits to open the second half, 48-38, just over three minutes in, and later 51-39 just a minute later. The Herd refused to give up, going on a 7-0 run, including five straight by Casey Baker.

A shot by Diamond Rogers gave UAB a 58-51 lead with 5:33 remaining, but from there Marshall would fight back, holding the Blazers without a point for the remainder of regulation. Down 58-53 with under two minutes remaining, Hart would connect on two free throws to cut the lead to three, then after a free throw by Handy, Hart would make two more to knot the game at 58 with 51 seconds remaining.

On the next possession, Meg Withrow would steal the ball from Amanda Peterson and hit Hart, who was fouled on the attempt. After missing the attempts, UAB had one last shot, but a three by Peterson fell short and sent the game into overtime.

In the extra period, the Blazers went on a 10-0 run. A three by Withrow cut the lead to seven, but UAB would connect on late free throws to take the 79-64 win.

Alyssa Hammond fell just short of a double-double, finishing with nine rebounds and eight boards. Tynikki Crook was also solid, grabbing seven rebounds and scoring five.

Conference USA leading scorer Diamond Rogers led the Blazers with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

UAB finished the game with a 39%-28% advantage in shooting while also holding a 54-51 advantage on the glass.

Following its first conference road swing of the season, Marshall will return home for two conference games next weekend. On Friday, the Herd will play host to Tulsa at 7 p.m. before facing SMU at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Cam Henderson Center.
