Memphis Defeats Women's Soccer, 4-0, Friday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Marshall University women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Conference USA foe, the University of Memphis, Friday evening at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex. The Thundering Herd will finish its 2008 home campaign against conference rival, UAB, Sunday.
With the loss, Marshall drops to 5-8-4 on the season, 3-6-0 in the league, while the Tigers (No. 10 in Central Region) improves to 11-4-1 overall, 7-2-0 in conference play.
"Memphis proved why they are a top team in the conference," Marshall's interim head coach Kevin Long said. "The squad is filled with great athletes and they are well-coached."
The Tigers scored its first goal in the 35th-minute as Lizzy Simonin notched her sixth goal of the season in the middle of the net from a Victoria Dalton pass.
Memphis went ahead 2-0 early in the second half as Melissa Smith registered her third goal of the season from a Simonin pass in the 47th-minute.
Kylie Hayes put the Blue and Gray up three as she drilled her fourth goal of the season from 25-yards out. Dalton notched another assist on the 48th-minute play.
Vendula Strnadova placed the finishing goal and her seventh of the season from the inside box to the left part of the net. Hayes assisted Strnadova in the 57th-minute goal.
Memphis enhanced its all-time series lead over Marshall, 4-0, dating back to 2005.
Sophomore forward Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind.) led the Herd with five shots, while sophomore forward Erika Duncan (Easthaven, Scotland) notched two shots.
The Tigers out-shot the Herd 20-9, with Memphis taking four to Marshall's zero shots on goal.
Junior co-captain keeper Liz Orton (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman keeper Lauren Roberts (Rome, Ga.) shared time between the pipes tonight. Orton notched three saves, while Roberts had two. Memphis' Jordan Boyle registered three saves.
"I hope we can get our game together for Sunday's match," Coach Long added. "We plan to have tremendous play to honor the seniors Sunday for their years with the Herd."
The Herd will play host to UAB, Sunday, with kick-off set for 2 p.m. at Sam Hood Field. Prior to Sunday's kick-off, Marshall will be recognizing its four seniors, Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio), Ali Lizotte (Iron Station, N.C.), Stephanie Kot (Lindenhurst, N.Y.), and Jessica Jennings (Dayton, Ohio) for their commitment to the program, university, and community.
The Blazers enter the weekend 6-9-1 overall, 4-3-1 in the league. Before traveling to Huntington, UAB will first face conference foe, East Carolina, in Birmingham, Ala., Friday evening. UAB holds the all-time series with Marshall, 3-0, which dates back to 2005. Last season, the Blazers defeated the Herd 3-0 in Marshall's final match of the regular season at Sam Hood Field.
Marshall will finish conference and regular season play against East Carolina, Friday, Oct. 31, in Greenville, N.C.
