BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall University men's basketball team, as part of its community service efforts, paid a visit to the Veterans Home of Barboursville on Wednesday.

Marshall, led by second-year coach Donnie Jones, visited with several of the 97 men and women who live at the Veterans Home. The team signed autographs, posed for pictures and even shot some basketball inside the recreation center. Debbie Thacker, the facility's recreation director, said that the veterans were looking forward to meeting the 2008-09 Thundering Herd.

"The guys really enjoyed this," Thacker said. "We've got a lot of Marshall fans here who are excited (to meet the team). Our pool room downstairs is full of Marshall stuff."

The Veterans Home, opened in 1981, serves as a domiciliary for veterans of war, including four World War II veterans. It is the only one of its kind in the state of West Virginia and houses those veterans who either lived or enlisted in West Virginia.

"I believe this was a very beneficial experience for our team to meet and visit with some of those who gave so much for our country," Jones said.
