Herd Swimming Inks Fourth Athlete

HUNTINGTON - Marshall head swimming and diving coach Leonard Kraus recently wrapped up the fall signing period by inking his fourth athlete in Vera Niemeyer from Wuerselen, Germany.

"Vera is an outstanding swimmer and we are excited about her being a part of our team,"Kraus said. "She is extremely versatile, and she will play a big role in the backstroke, free and IM. She will also be a big time swimmer on relays."

This year Niemeyer competed at the German age group championships, where she finished third in the 200 IM and 100 back and fourth in the 100 IM. During the summer, she competed at the German Olympic trails where she placed in the top-22 in three events, including 12th-place in the 200 backstroke, 19th in the 200 IM and 22nd in the 100 backstroke.

Niemeyer has won four bronze, two silver and one gold medal in North Rhine regional events since 2005, and has competed in all German age group championships since 2002.She has ranked in the top-10 competitors in her region in every season since 2002.

"Vera is a great person and is very strong in the classroom," Kraus said. "I am so pleased with this signing. Along with Maribeth, Sarah and Jamie, this has been a very strong class that with help us to continue to improve as a program."
