AUBRUN, Ala. - The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team will take the road for a second-consecutive weekend to participate in the Auburn University Tiger Invitation, Friday, Feb. 15 through Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Jane B. Moore Field.

Marshall (3-3) squares off with Gardner-Webb (0-0) in the tournament opener at 3 p.m. (CT) Friday. It marks the first meeting between the two schools and will be the season opener for the Bulldogs. The Herd follows with its first night game against McNeese State at 8:30 p.m. (CT). Furman (1-1) and Auburn (0-0) proceed Friday's action with start times scheduled for 12:30 p.m. (CT) and 3 p.m. respectively. The Purple Aces of Evansville (1-2) will conclude tournament for Marshall, Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT).

Last weekend, the Herd opened the season at the Red/Black Showcase at Athens, Ga., and started the season with a 4-3 victory over No. 8/10 DePaul, its highest ranked opponent defeat in the program's history. In the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, freshman Melanie Stoehr walked, scoring Rachel Folden from third to capture the victory.

Marshall would go on and sweep the College of Charleston in tournament play. The Herd defeated the Cougars, 12-2 in the first meeting and mercy ruled the Southern Conference foe, 9-1 in five innings. Marshall was led by its All-American catcher, Folden, who was honored for her efforts with the Conference USA Hitter of the Week accolade.

Folden went 10-for-19 (.526) with six doubles and four RBIs during the six-game tournament. The Baldwin Park, Calif., native also picked up her 42nd career home run and continues to extend her all-time mark in the category.

Junior pitcher Autumn Mitchell was also spectacular for the Herd in three appearances on the mound. During her 2008 debut, Mitchell pitched a complete game and didn't surrender an earned run against the College of Charleston. She went on to appear in two more games against Georgia and DePaul without giving up a run and finished with a 0.00 ERA for the weekend.

Sophomore Caitlyn Jackson went 10-for-20 (.500) for the Herd and racked up six RBIs, second on the team. She recorded two triples during the weekend and pitched a complete game for the Herd in the 4-3 victory over DePaul, in the season opener.
