Marshall Softball Looks to Add to Three-Game Winning Streak

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., for the 2008 Frost Classic, hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Friday, Feb. 29-March 2. The 10-team classic includes Connecticut, Indiana, Marshall, Jackson State, Wright State, Chattanooga, Buffalo, Kentucky, Morehead State and Eastern Illinois.

The Herd will square off against the Eastern Illinois Panthers in its opener, Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Chattanooga State Stadium and finish Friday's action against former Mid-American Conference foe, Buffalo at 6:45 p.m. The Panthers and Herd have met three times during the programs' history with the Herd defeating Eastern Illinois in all three contests. The 15-game series between the Bulls and Herd has Marshall on the right side of an 11-4 advantage.

Saturday's pair of games features Marshall versus the University of Kentucky at 9:45 a.m. at Frost Stadium with a showdown against Jackson State at 2:15 p.m. at Chattanooga State Stadium to follow. Kentucky holds a narrow 4-3 lead over the Herd in the all-time series, while Marshall meets Jackson State for the first time.

The Herd concludes action, Sunday at 2:15 p.m. when it meets host, Chattooga at Frost Stadium.

Marshall is currently riding a three-game winning streak after its successful play at the University of San Diego Invitational where it improved its overall record to 8-6. The Herd finished the weekend outscoring its opponents 22-7.

During the rain delayed opener, Marshall defeated the Nevada Wolfpack, 4-2 with solid pitching performances from pitching ace Caitlyn Jackson and Autumn Mitchell. Jackson picked up her second win of the season and Mitchell was credited with the Herd's first save.

The Herd continued its winning ways with a 6-4 victory over host institution San Diego. Marshall received all six RBIs from different student-athletes. Marcena Bertoldo and Rachael Sofie earned multiple hits in the contest and each tallied an RBI.

Marshall's bats got hot in the final game of the tournament as the Herd cruised to a 12-1 rout over UC Riverside. Four different Marshall hitters had two hits, which was culminated by Samantha Rodriguez's 2-for-4 effort with three runs and four RBIs.

During the weekend, Folden went 5-for-10 with three doubles, three runs and an RBI. She now has 10 doubles on the season, a conference-best, and increased her season batting average to .429.

Sofie finished the USD Invitational with three RBIs and a .444 batting average and now has a team-high .452 season average.

Senior Deanna Tourville and Jackson are the Herd's RBI leaders with 13.
