Women's Tennis Rolls over No. 73 Yale, 5-2

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team earned another season victory against the 73rd nationally-ranked Yale University, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Sami Tennis Center in University Park, Pa.
The No. 53-ranked Thundering Herd squad (6-2) improved its all-time series lead over the Bulldogs (1-1) to 2-0.
"I am proud of them today," Marshall's head coach John Mercer said. "We played smart and were very competitive at every position."
The 15th-ranked Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) duo continued their perfect season at the number one with a 9-8 decision against the No. 50 pair of Lindsay Clark and Lauren Ritz. Playing at the No. 3, Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) and Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) took an 8-1 victory over Sarah Lederhandler and Janet Kim.
Schmitt (19th) also remained perfect at the number one singles position with a straight-set victory over Kim, 6-3, 6-0. Soor took a 6-2, 6-3 win against Lederhandler at the No. 3. Playing the four, Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) defeated Stevi Petrelli, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. Keener closed out the singles with a 4-6, 6-4, 13-11 decision over Ritz at the number six spot.
The Bulldogs' Jessica Rhee and Clark took singles victories over Thaddea Lock (Bristol, England) and Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) at the two and five positions.
"Yale was a good team that will have a lot of wins," coach Mercer added. "We had an excellent win over a talented team."
Marshall will play host to the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Cincinnati on Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Herd will face the Panthers at 12 p.m. and then the Bearcats at 5 p.m.
