Women's Tennis Ends Five-Match Losing Streak Saturday

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Marshall University's women's tennis team ended its five-match losing streak Saturday morning with a 6-1 advantage over Middle Tennessee State at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center. The 60th-ranked Thundering Herd squad improved to 13-8 overall while the Blue Raiders dropped to 6-14 so far this season.

Marshall continued its all-time series lead over Middle Tennessee State, 7-0.

"We did a great job implementing what we have done at practice on to the court," Marshall's assistant coach Megan Muth said. "We are progressing in a positive way."

The Herd swept the Blue Raiders in doubles competition beginning with the 26th-ranked duo of Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) at the number one position. Schmitt and Soor took an 8-0 decision over Marlene Chemin and Stephanie Parkison.

Playing the number two slot, Isabell Raich (Klaus, Austria) and Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) defeated Claudia Szabo and A.K. Siljestrom, 8-6. Jessica Keener (Reston, Va.) and Yulia Kashelkina (Moscow, Russia) finished with an 8-3 advantage over Shannon Hartmann and Pooja Kommireddi at the number three.

In singles competition, the 58th-ranked Schmitt defeated Siljestrom, 6-0, 6-1, at the number one mark. Schwartz took a 6-0, 4-6, 10-6(3) victory over Parkison at the number two position to end her six-match singles losing streak. Playing the number three, Soor defeated Szabo, 6-2, 6-2.

To end a five-match singles losing streak, Raich dropped Chemin, 6-4, 6-1, at the number four slot. Keener took a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Andrea Herrera at the number five.

Kommireddi defeated Kashelkina, 6-1, 7-6 at the number six position to give the lone victory for the Blue Raiders.

"Today was a step forward towards our remaining two matches against Virginia Tech and Louisville," Assistant Coach Muth added. "With this victory and the final two matches of the season, they will help us prepare for the Conference USA tournament."

The Herd ended its longest road stand of the season, 2-5, with another victory back on March 14th against Harvard, 5-2.

Marshall will play host to the 51st-ranked squad Virginia Tech, Wednesday at the Huntington Tennis Club with first serve set for 1 p.m. The Herd stands 2-7 against ranked foes this season. Wednesday will be the Herd's final home match for the season.
