CHARLESTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University's women's soccer team took a 2-0 decision over the University of Charleston in its only exhibition match of the 2008 season, Saturday, at Triana Field.
"We dominated play and I am pleased with our performance," Marshall's interim head coach Kevin Long said. "Even though we had a good showing, Charleston was very competitive."
The Thundering Herd's sophomore Missy Gordon (Carmel, Ind.) tallied Marshall's first goal at the 36th minute from a Katie Ball (Louisville, Ky.) pass.
"We executed what we attempted to demonstrate," interim head coach Long continued. "We were very good at shutting down and creating offense."
Freshman Kaitlin Devine (Leonardtown, Md.) put the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles as she scored the Herd's final goal late in the 89th minute.
With one week left of preseason, coach Long will hope to increase efficient play and decrease fatigue before beginning regular season play.
The Herd opens regular season action with a two-match road trip beginning Saturday, Aug. 23, against St. Bonaventure University at 3:00 p.m. in St. Bonaventure, N.Y. Then Marshall travels to Emmitsburg, Md. to face Mount St. Mary's University, Saturday, Aug. 30 at 1:00 p.m.
