WAYNESVILLE, N.C. - The Marshall women's golf team will open up the 2008-09 season with a trip to Waynesville, N.C. for the Great Smokies Intercollegiate, a 36-hole tournament set to start on Monday.
Marshall will be one of 24 teams competing in the tournament, which will feature a round of 18 holes on Monday and Tuesday. A few of the other schools scheduled to compete include: former Mid-American Conference rival Akron, Appalachian State, Eastern Kentucky, Morehead State, Old Dominion, Radford, Winthrop and Western Carolina.
Head coach Meredith Knight Rowsey, beginning her fifth season at the helm of the Thundering Herd, returns an experienced lineup from last year's team that registered top three finishes in four contests in 2007-08, including a win in the First Market Bank Intercollegiate held in Williamsburg, Va. in March.
Marshall returns an extremely talented class, led by a trio of sophomores; Larie Lynch, Kristina Garrett and Rachel Halloran. Lynch led the Herd last season with four individual top ten finishes, including a top finish in September's Lady Herd Golf Classic.
Garrett registered a fifth place finish in April's Lady Eagle Invitational held by Southern Miss while Halloran registered a career-best 13th place finish in the Lady Herd Golf Classic. This weekend will also mark the debut of Marshall's two freshmen; Kaci Boyd and Maria Battaglia.
