Men's Soccer Plays Bowling Green to 3-3 Tie

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Two overtimes could not break the deadlock between Marshall and Bowling Green as the two teams finished the game with a 3-3 tie Saturday at Sam Hood Field.
The Thundering Herd (0-7-1) scored first in the contest when junior Dustin Dawes (Nashville, Tenn.) scored his second goal of the year off a soft pass from senior Kolby LaCrone (Zanesville, Ohio).
In the 26th minute the Falcons (3-4-1) scored when goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker had a direct kick from the middle of the field bounce off the crossbar rebounding to Byard Ebling to tie the game at 1-1.
Just two minutes later Marshall would reclaim the lead when senior Sterling Flunder (Bothell, Wash.) would score his first goal of the year off of a keeper save to take a 2-1 lead into the half.
Bowling Green would tie the game early in the second half when Chris Jurtovski used a header to get past goalkeeper Robert Smith (Niagara Falls, Ontario). In his first start with the Herd, Smith played 110 minutes and had five saves.
The tie would be broken once again when the Falcons used a penalty kick from goalie Shoemaker to take their first lead 3-2.
With just under 10 minutes left in regulation, Marshall would comeback when Flunder netted a goal for his second of the game with an assist to junior Michael Bolt (Hendersonville, Tenn.). Dawes and Flunder both lead the team in goals with two each.
The game would go the distance and two 10-minute overtimes with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.
The Herd will have a quick turnaround to prepare for its first Conference USA match against rival Kentucky Wednesday Oct. 1 at Sam Hood Field at 7 p.m.
