Swimming and Diving Falls to Xavier

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University swimming and diving team dropped its season opener to Xavier (161 to 135) on Saturday afternoon at Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
"We weren't as sharp as I was hoping for us to be," head coach Leonard Kraus said. "The effort was there, but we need to get back in the pool and keep training."
MU was led by two wins apiece from senior Jenny Johnsson and freshman Arlie Rykosky. Johnsson was tops in the 500 freestyle (5:13.45) and 1000 freestyle (10:39.97) while Rykosky took the nod in the 200 butterfly (2:08.77) and 100 freestyle (55.02).
"Arlie Rykosky swam really well in the 200 fly and 100 free," said Kraus. "It's great for us to have a freshman class that can make an impact; she did great in her first collegiate meet."
Senior Kelsie Eberly also picked up a win for the Herd; claiming first in the 100 backstroke (1:01.86). Erin Kennedy came in a close second in the event with a time of 1:03.08.
MU swimming and diving will head to Morgantown, W.Va., on Oct. 17 to take on West Virginia and Duquesne. Action is slated to start at noon.
"West Virginia will be the best team we will face until we see SMU," said Kraus. "They have two NCAA All-Americans - in the backstroke and sprints - so we have to be able to counter. They are a little thinner in distance, so hopefully we can make up some points in those events."
