Thundering Herd Madness Set For Thursday, Oct. 22

Marshall basketball's annual Thundering Herd Madness is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 22 at the Cam Henderson Center. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with ticket prices set at $5 for general admission seating throughout the lower bowl and upper arena sections of the Henderson Center.

Marshall's women's basketball team, led by ninth-year head coach Royce Chadwick will open the event by introducing the 2009-10 edition of the MU squad before the team scrimmages during the 30-minute stanza.

Head coach Donnie Jones, entering his third season at Marshall, will introduce the 2009-10 edition of the Thundering Herd men's team to the crowd at approximately 8 p.m. A drills session will follow. The team will also participate in a 3-point shootout and a slam dunk competition along with a scrimmage. Following the festivities, the team will participate in an autograph session for the fans.

Throughout the night, the MU Ticket Office will be hosting a Choose a Seat promotion. A variety of season ticket options are available and prices start as low as $95. For more information, call the ticket office at 1-800-THE-HERD.

Marshall will play 18 home games this season, beginning with a Nov. 10 exhibition against West Virginia Wesleyan. Highlighting the eight Conference USA home games is a Jan. 27 contest against defending league champion Memphis.

"We are looking forward to showcasing our veterans and newcomers and to start an exciting season," Jones said.

Marshall returns four starters; guards Shaquille Johnson, Chris Lutz, Damier Pitts, and forward Tyler Wilkerson. Other returning letterwinners include Tirrell Baines, Darryl Merthie, and Dago Pena. Western Carolina transfer Camden Miller is now eligible after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Sophomore center Nigel Spikes joins two transfers; Eladio Espinosa and Antonio Haymon and five freshmen: Noah Fischer, Bobby Horodyski, Brandon Hutchison, DeAndre Kane, and Hassan Whiteside to comprise Marshall's 2009 newcomers. Espinosa, a transfer from Big East member South Florida, will sit out this season per NCAA transfer rules.
