El Paso, Texas - UTEP's Tameka Sumter (San Antonio, Texas) notched two second half goals to lift the Miner's to a 4-1 victory against Marshall University in Friday night's Conference USA women's soccer match at University Field.
Marshall drops its second straight to fall to 11-4 (4-3 C-USA), while UTEP has won two of its last three to improve to 11-4 (5-3 C-USA).
With the match tied 1-1, Anoop Josan (Edmonton, Alberta) gained commitment from Herd goalkeeper Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) and sent a through ball to Sumter who completed the play into an empty net to earn the game-winner.
Sumter added her second goal of the match and her team-leading eighth of the season just 7:56 later. Sumter earned her two goals on four shots.
A MU defender deflection into the goal, off a cross sent into the box would add insurance for the Miners and conclude the scoring on the night.
Skye Schultz (Tucson, Ariz.) gave UTEP an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the sixth minute, when she rebounded a Chelsea Winbush (Allen, Texas) shot, and finished into an empty net. Schultz also tallied an assist on Sumter's second goal.
Marshall tied the game at one at the 51:22 mark, when Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky.) gained control of a bouncing ball in the box and was able to tap a shot past Miner's goalkeeper Chandra Morden (Winnipeg, Manitoba). The goal is Tabler's fifth of the season and her second in as many games.
UTEP outshot Marshall 17-7 in the match, including 9-1 in the first half.
The Miners lead the all-time series 4-0.
MU plays its final regular season road match on Sunday at 2 p.m. E.T., as it travels to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on Colorado College.
