HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University women's soccer team drops its Conference USA finale 1-0 to East Carolina on Friday night at Sam Hood Field.

With the loss MU is knocked out of playoff contention and finishes its 2009 season at 12-7-0, its highest win total in program history. Its 5-6 C-USA record is its best in conference since the 2001 season. The Pirates improve to 9-7-3 (4-6-1 C-USA) in its final match of the season.

The game remained a defensive battled throughout the first half, with each goalie tallying three saves.

The second half started with pressure coming from the Herd but it was the Pirates who would strike for the only goal of the evening. In the 77th minute Amanda Malkiewicz (Forked, River, N.J.) scored on a turn around shot inside the five yard box, off a header from Jessica Woodward (Wake Forest, N.C.). The goal was Malkiewicz's sixth of the season.

Molly Snead (Cincinnati, Ohio) tallied a game high five shots on the night, placing three on goal.

Goalkeeper Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) registered five saves, while ECU goalkeeper Berit Hansen tallied six.

Seniors Snead, Orton and Rebecca Voss were honored following the matchup as they finished up their careers at Marshall.
