HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University women's soccer team finished its spring season successfully with four shutouts and had only one loss against top teams. The Thundering Herd finished the spring 4-1-3 overall.

"The team did a great job moving forward from where they left off at the end of the fall," Marshall's head coach Kevin Long said. "We saw great growth in every player in all aspects of the game."

The focus of the spring schedule was to challenge the team with a tough level of opponents and play against different styles to prepare for the pressure of the fall.

The Herd faced four teams that appeared in the 2008 NCAA tournament and posted a 2-0-2 record against the top opponents.

Marshall ended with 1-1 ties against Elite Eight member, James Madison and first round participant Radford. The Herd had 1-0 victories over first round participants Morehead State and Virginia Tech.

"We saw significant gains in the weight room, and the team has taken major strides in their training and game mentality," Coach Long continued.

Senior Erin Johnson (Mansfield, Ohio) earned Marshall's Leadership Award at the Herd's Olympic Sports Banquet Monday evening.

The complete spring schedule with results included:
Morehead State 1-0 win
Charleston University 3-0 win
Saint Francis 3-3 tie
James Madison 1-1 tie
Ohio University 3-0 win
Virginia Tech 1-0 win
Radford University 1-1 tie
Cincinnati 1-3 loss

"We are very excited about the results of our spring games, however the real success can be measured in the growth each individual player experienced over the spring season," Coach Long added. "The development of our players will matter most in our success for the fall."
