Marshall Faces UCF in C-USA Tournament First Round

EL PASO, Texas - The Marshall University softball team will begin its quest for a Conference USA championship with a first round match-up against UCF Thursday at 2 p.m. at Helen of Troy Field in El Paso, Texas.
The No. 4 seeded Thundering Herd (30-19, 11-10) met the No. 5 Knights (27-26, 11-12) earlier this season in Orlando losing two of three. UCF took the doubleheader Saturday before Marshall won the series finale 9-6 Sunday.
Thursday's opening round match-up between Marshall and UCF will be the 17th time these two schools have met. The series goes back before both were members of Conference USA as the Knights took two of three of those meetings.
In the first C-USA series in Huntington, the Herd swept all three games. When the series shifted to Orlando, UCF took two more games and in 2008, the Knights swept the Herd in Huntington.
Over the last week of the season, the Herd are coming off two wins at Ohio and taking one of three at Houston. In the midweek against Ohio, Marshall scored a season high in runs winning 12-0 in game one and 3-1 win in game two. In two games the team hit five home runs.
The Knights are coming off a series win against UTEP taking the Saturday doubleheader and falling Sunday to the Miners. Tiffani Lane, who is batting .357 with eight triples, was named hitter of the week for her performance against UTEP.
The game will be available on Gametracker and WMUL 88.1 FM will travel to El Paso and broadcast the game on the airwaves and online at http://www.marshall.edu/wmul. Ryan Epling and Scott Hall will call the game.
