KINGWOOD, W.Va. - Marshall University junior golfer Larie Lynch's record play helped her capture the 2009 Women's Tri-State Amateur Championship.
The event, which was hosted by the Preston Country Club in Kingwood, took place last weekend.
Lynch opened the tournament up with a 73 in Saturday's opening round before shooting a 4-under 68, a tournament record, to catch leader Megan Leineweber, a senior at Radford University.
Down by two shots heading into the 18th and final hole of the tournament, Lynch birdied the par-3 while Leineweber shot a bogie to force a playoff.
On the first hole of the playoff, Lynch got on the green in two shots and took par following two putts. A missed putt for par by Leineweber on the playoff gave the championship to Lynch.
"This is exciting, but what makes it more exciting is having my dad caddie for me," Lynch said. "He helped me around the greens. He told me not to second guess myself. On No. 18, he helped me read the putt and I drained it."
Graduate assistant and former MU golfer Meredith Crislip also participated in the event, shooting a 158.
Lynch will continue her summer play in two weeks at the 107th Women's North-South Amateur at Pinehurst Resort. It will take place from July 13-18.
