BELGRADE, Serbia - Thundering Herd senior Chantelle Handy led the Great Britain National Team to a 3-3 record and will face Poland in a battle for fifth place at the World University Games.
Handy enjoyed a successful run in the tournament thus far, averaging 11.0 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. She has hit 31-of-54 two-point attempts, a .574 shooting percentage. Her effort from the free throw line has been even better, where she has connected on all four attempts.
In the opening contest against Serbia, Handy fell just a rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 12 points while taking in nine rebounds in a 76-67 win over tournament host Serbia.
After scoring ten points in a 93-59 loss to the United States, Handy bounced back with a 16-point, 10-rebound effort in a 90-56 victory over France. She was a perfect 5-5 shooting inside the three-point line.
On July 5, Handy struggled with her shooting, making three out of eight shots, but made up for it on the boards, setting her tournament high with 13 rebounds in a close 89-83 loss to the Czech Republic.
Handy notched six points and three assists in a 74-64 loss to Poland before rebounding with 15 points and seven boards in a 94-74 win over Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.
Great Britain is set to face off against Poland for a second time on Friday. Handy will look to improve on her 3-7 shooting effort in the first match-up against Poland.
"Going into the playoffs for 5th or 6th place is exciting," Handy said. "We have made a lot of progress in this tournament and Great Britain has earned some respect and shown that we can compete at this level."
