AKRON, Ohio- Marshall softball assistant coach Amanda Williams helped lead the Rockford Thunder to their first National Pro Fastpitch title when they defeated the USSSA Pride 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Firestone Stadium. Rockford knocked out top-ranked Akron to advance to the championship, where they clenched two-of-three to capture the Cowles Cup.

"It was awesome to have two former players represented in the NFP championship finals," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "I am sure it is one of the most rewarding experiences for both Amanda and Jessica (Williams) in their playing careers."

Amanda finished the regular season with career highs in batting average (.284), RBI (15), walks (13) and hits (29). She also ranked ninth in the NPF in on-base percentage (.392), RBI and walks.

"I feel blessed to have the opportunity to play with the best of the best and it has been an honor to have won the NPF championship with the Thunder," Williams said. "This is something I will never forget and I want to thank my teammates, the organization and the NPF for a great season. Now, I look forward to returning to Huntington and working toward a championship season with the Herd."

Williams added to her impressive resume when she was named to the All-NPF team last week, as announced by the league office.

"Our student-athletes at Marshall are fortunate to be coached by someone like Amanda," Stanton said. "She helped establish the foundation for softball's success and continues to make our program better. Amanda is at the top of her game and is one of the best young coaches in the business."
