PITTSBURGH, Pa.- Marshall University's Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky.) scored her first goal of the season to give The Herd a 1-0 overtime victory over Duquesne University in Friday nights non-conference women's soccer match at Arthur J. Rooney Field.
MU won its second consecutive match to move them at 2-0 on the season. Duquesne remains winless as it drops its second in a row, moving them to 0-2.
Tabler netted the game-winner in the 98th minute off a cross from sophomore Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.), to give DeSumma her second assist of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Orton (Ft. Collins, Colo.) tallied five saves on the night as she is yet to allow a goal on the season. Orton moves ahead of Kayla Johnson as Marshall's all-time career leader in shutouts with 10.
"This was a very evenly matched game, they are a very talented team and are greatly coached," Marshall Head Coach Kevin Longsaid. "All around I am very happy about the game and about the 2-0 start."
The Thundering Herd have started 2-0 in both of Long's seasons with Marshall.
This is The Herd's first overtime victory since becoming a member of Conference USA and is also their first win over Dukes in three tries.
Marshall will close the Duquesne Tournament against Manhattan College (1-0) for the two schools first ever meeting, on Sunday in Pittsburgh. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
Manhattan College earned a 3-1 victory over Robert Morris in the first game of the Duquesne Tournament.
