BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Marshall University men's soccer team dropped its 2009 season opener on Tuesday afternoon at the hands of the Bowling Green 2-0 at Cochrane Field on the campus of Bowling Green.
Despite outshooting the Falcons 14-11, the Herd was unable to find the back of the net, while BGSU netted two goals, one in each half.
MU found themselves down early as BGSU's Cameron Hepple's free kick from just outside the 18-yard box found the top left corner, beating the Herd's net minder Greg Walter (Slippery Rock, Pa.). Hepple's game-winner came in the 14th minute.
Marshall came out offensively minded in the second half as the outshot BGSU 9-5. However, the Falcon's second half goalie, Dylan Schoettley, was credited with just one save. The Falcon's Chris Jurtovski would add an insurance goal in the 71st minute as Bowling Green (1-0) went on to claim a 2-0 victory.
Marshall (0-1) heads to the Belmont Invitational this weekend in Nashville, Tenn., where they face Belmont of Friday night at 8:15 p.m. and end the weekend on Sunday against Lipscomb at 2 p.m.
