GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Marshall University men's soccer team (1-2-1) drew even with the Spartans of UNC Greensboro on Friday night in the Herd's first match of the UNCG Kickoff Classic.
"Playing a team like them in this environment is like playing a conference game," Head Coach Bob Gray said. "They were an Elite 8 team last year, on their home field, which is one of the nicest stadiums in the country. I am happy with the result."
The Spartans struck first as E.J. O'Keeffe headed home a goal off a corner kick passed MU's keeper Daniel Withrow (Rochester Hills, Mich.). The goal came at the 21-minute mark and gave UNCG a 1-0 heading into the second half.
The Herd would strike back in the 55th minute as defender Matt Dickerson (Warsaw, Ohio) tallied his second goal of the season when the ball fell to him in the Spartans' box and he buried it from eight yards out. The goal was unassisted.
The two teams would play evenly in the remaining 35 minutes and into overtime.
"It's difficult to steal a win on the road in this atmosphere," said Gray. "I just hope we can put back-to-back games together."
The Herd clash with Elon on Sunday afternoon at noon, to conclude the UNCG Kickoff Classic. The Phoenix also tied in the first game of the classic; going scoreless with Longwood. Live stats will be available on www.uncgspartans.com.
