HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall University's Erika Duncan tallied her second goal of the year late in the second half to defeat Ohio University 1-0 in Sunday afternoon's non-conference women's soccer game at Sam Hood Field.
This is the Herd's first ever victory over Ohio University. The victory improves Marshall's record to 6-0 and keeps them unbeaten on the season. Coming into Sunday Marshall was one of just 16 teams in Division I women's soccer to be unbeaten and untied.
"We really wanted this win, we wanted to break the spell that Ohio had over us." Marshall Head Coach Kevin Long said
MU has yet to allow a goal in 543:53 of play. While Ohio drops to 1-4 on the season, with its only victory of the season coming against Cleveland State.
The match remained scoreless after an evenly played first half. The Bobcats started the second half dominating ball control and frazzling the Herd with pressure. However, an OU red card on Toye Famodu changed the momentum for the Herd who were able to muster up numerous scoring opportunities.
"They did a great job pressuring us in the second half," Long said. "But after that red card we were able to stretch the field which is just what we needed."
Duncan's goal came in the 86th minute, when she broke through two defenders and slotted a shot past Bobcats goalkeeper Jess MacLean (Loveland, Ohio). Duncan registered four shots on the day.
The Herd outshot the Bobcats 12-3 and forced Ohio into seven offside penalties.
Six of Marshall's nine season goals have come in the second half.
Marshall returns to action next weekend when it travels to Lexington, Ky. for the University of Kentucky Tournament. The Herd will take on Tennessee Tech on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. MU then takes on Western Kentucky on Sunday afternoon to wrap up its non-conference schedule.
