HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall University softball team will open the weekend at home with a Green & White game at Dot Hicks Field at 10 a.m. on Friday. They will then travel to Lexington, Ky., Sunday to battle it out with Kentucky (12:30 p.m.) and Ohio State (2:30 p.m.).
"Our initial Green & White games will help us work together as a team in a competitive setting," head coach Shonda Stanton said. "We will be tested quickly traveling to Lexington to face NCAA participants Ohio State and Kentucky. Having the ability to play national caliber teams this early in the year is important in the development of our athletes."
The Herd will dual a Kentucky squad that finished the 2009 season with a 34-23 record and advanced to the NCAA Regionals, where they were eliminated after losing to BYU and Ohio State.
Ohio State finished last season with a record of 47-11 and advanced to the Super Regionals where sixth-ranked Georgia knocked them out in two games.
"It is an incredible adjustment for student-athletes their first semester in college," Stanton said. "With seven newcomers it was important for us to provide a schedule for the fall that would help our team come together."
Marshall will return home for the annual Alumni Game on Oct. 3, at 4 p.m. at Dot Hicks Field.
